The Federative Republic of Brazil is the largest and most populous country in Latin America and the fifth largest country in the world. To the east Brazil is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the remaining border is formed by all the other South American countries except for Chile and Ecuador. Because Brazil was colonized by the Portuguese in 1500 it is the only country in South America where Portuguese is spoken. Although Brazil has a very large population with urban centers concentrated primarily along the coast it is not densely populated, with uninhabited areas in the interior of the country. Both the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn traverse Brazil. Due to the climate, which ranges from tropical to sub-tropical, the flora and fauna are lush, colorful and plentiful.
